Week 3 - Summary (April 10 - April 17)

On Friday April 10th at Warren Wilson College, we worked through the ACTION POD 6 experiments - using vibration as a tool to energize & release the body & mind in preparation for action & imagination, then focusing on defining rounded shapes, angular shapes & twisted shapes in the body - then Madalyn & Mike took it in turns to be “sculptor” & “raw material”, first with the body alone & then introducing other compositional elements to create Human Sculptures - taking this action out into the campus grounds in the public sphere. …………………………….. We then discussed concepts of performance & installation & viewed video & images. I talked about some of my large scale performance installation projects.

Speaking from my own experience of performance installation, I have often worked from the concept of performance being presented within the context of installation - so an environment is created using the performance itself (this may only consist of bodies in space somewhere - with no additional installation material) - the point being that the performance is a continuous environment & that the viewer is free to come & go as they please - the choice of how they interact in time & space with that environment is theirs. It is as if they were inside a cultivated garden, but with bodies in performance, rather than trees, bushes & flowers. (now if the performance installation is inside a cultivated garden, then there is both!)
I have also worked from a different angle - designing an installation based on a theme that is its own environment, regardless of whether anyone is there or not - then also including performance as an extension / augmentation of that environment (however, I believe that the performance element of these installations could also stand alone without depending on being inside the environment)
I am including a link here to some of my larger scale performance installation projects, in case anyone is curious! …. there is a preface document at the top of the page that gives a brief statement about the work.

So … this may have addressed some of the questions / issues that Robyn brought up. I actually agree that certain architectural environments, as well as cultivated gardens, cross categories/borders of definition here - due to the intention of creative design in giving the viewer/participant an aesthetic experience of/in that environment.
Yes - I concur that performance-as-installation (or installation-of-performance, meaning - consisting of the performance) IS defined by how the performance occupies time & space. However, my definition in answer to the role of Created-response to Real-environment is that of “Site-Specific” performance. ……… I think that there has been a certain amount of confusion, especially in the dance world, between site-specific performance & performance installation (especially as the idea of installation got more trendy & dancers wanted to sat they were doing it!)
Anyway …

Robyn - I love your imagined installation of the carnivorous plants & insects & all the possible forms it could take & how they might be defined in the context of artistic presentation. Now I really want to see this piece!
In Robyn’s Action POD 5 video, there are two things that evolve from the experiment that I find interesting. One is the role of the camera itself, as it gives a very specific window into this world for the viewer. Also it becomes all the environment & then action - as there is little given away about the performer, it almost feels as though the objects & elements are animated by themselves!

Gwen - your video seems to have disappeared today! …. it was still active yesterday & I saw some of it, but not all. You mentioned the camera placement as being circumstantial due to lack of tripod - but actually it works beautifully, as it allows the viewer a way into the environment that feels so natural, as though we were laying on the grass hanging out with you & relaxing in the sunshine & fresh air.
